The Elders
Walnut Street Church of Christ

Many people hesitate to visit a church because they do not know what to expect when they go. We hope this brief explanation will cause you to want to visit us soon at the church that meets at Walnut Street.

What to expect in Worship . . .

Our worship is simple and devout. It is not characterized by displays of emotion and excitement, but is calculated to draw each worshiper closer to God and to provide enduring spiritual strength.

It is our purpose to be governed in everything we do by the Bible alone. For this reason, our worship consists only of those five acts which the New Testament reveals were performed in the worship of the early church. Each Sunday we sing songs of praise to God (Colossians 3:16), speak to our Heavenly Father as we pray (Acts 2:42), give of our means to support the work of the church (I Corinthians 16:2), partake of the Lord's Supper in memory of Christ's death on the cross (1st Corinthians 11:23-29), and teach and preach the Word of God (2 Timothy 2:15).

Our purpose in worship is to maintain the attitude Christ commanded when He said, "God is a Spirit; and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." (John 4:24).

The Singing . . .

Our singing, which many visitors find the most interesting and inspiring part of our worship, deserves a special word. Since the New Testament instructs Christians to sing (Ephesians 5:19), we encourage everyone in the assembly to participate in the song service. In the New Testament we find no authority for the use of instruments of music in the worship of the church. Our visitors are often astonished at how beautiful and spiritually stirring it is when, unhindered by mechanical accompaniment, everyone lifts his voice in praise to God.

What Will Be Taught . . .

We accept no religious authority but the divine authority expressed in the inspired Scriptures. We believe "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16, 17).

We have no sectarian organization, no denominational name, and no human doctrines and creeds. We are simply Christians, and our purpose is to follow Christ by following His teachings given through the apostles and prophets in the New Testament. Therefore, the preaching you hear will be Bible preaching.

You Will Not Be Embarrassed . . .

When you visit us, you will be our respected guest. No one will knowingly embarrass you in any way.

At the close of the sermon, those who wish to become Christians are invited to accept the gospel and yield to its call with deep spiritual conviction. (Acts 2:37, 38). However, no one is singled out for public attention and no one will go about in the audience urging people to go forward.

Bible Classes . . .

In addition to worship services on Sunday, Bible classes for all ages are taught by dedicated Christians each Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. Various classes are also conducted regularly for our Ladies.

In each Bible class, only the Bible and Bible-centered materials will be used. We are convinced that the whole family can be greatly benefited by studying God's Word in our Bible Study Program.

You Are Invited . . .

We extend to you our most cordial invitation to meet with us often, and we promise you a friendly welcome. You may come as many times as you wish to learn, to listen, and to participate. We sincerely believe you will be benefited by coming.
